Choosing the right water treatment system is essential for ensuring product quality, operational efficiency, and regulatory compliance. With a range of technologies available—Reverse Osmosis (RO), Ultrafiltration (UF), Electrodeionization (EDI), and Containerized solutions—each serves distinct purposes. This guide will help you understand these systems, how to choose among them, and where they are best applied.

1. Ultrafiltration (UF)
Ultrafiltration membranes operate with pore sizes around 0.01 microns, effectively removing suspended solids, colloids, bacteria, viruses, and most microorganisms from water sources. Unlike RO, UF cannot remove dissolved salts or ionic contaminants.
Best suited for:
- Pretreatment for RO systems to prevent membrane fouling
- Drinking water purification from surface water sources
- Wastewater reuse and tertiary treatment
- Food and beverage processing (clarification, concentration)
The following 40tph UF equipment is provided to the Marine Ecological Museum.

UF systems operate at low pressure, consume minimal energy, and require no chemical addition, making them a cost-effective first-stage treatment solution. As a pretreatment step, UF can significantly reduce cleaning frequency and extend the lifespan of downstream RO membranes.
2. Reverse Osmosis (RO)
Reverse Osmosis is a molecular-level separation technology that uses pressure to force water through a semi-permeable membrane, rejecting dissolved salts, heavy metals, organic compounds, and microorganisms. RO membrane pore sizes are approximately 0.1 nanometers—thousands of times smaller than UF pores. Typical RO systems achieve 95–99% salt rejection and produce water with conductivity below 20 μS/cm.
Best suited for:
- Sea water and brackish water desalination
- Industrial process water for electronics, pharmaceutical, and food industries
- Boiler feedwater treatment
- Municipal water purification

3. Electrodeionization (EDI)
EDI combines electrodialysis and ion exchange technologies to produce ultrapure water without chemical regeneration. In an EDI module, a DC electric field drives ions through ion-exchange membranes and resins, continuously regenerating the resin through water electrolysis. EDI systems typically achieve product water resistivity of 15–18 MΩ·cm, approaching the theoretical limit of pure water.
Best suited for:
- Semiconductor and electronics manufacturing (requires >18 MΩ·cm ultrapure water)
- Pharmaceutical production (USP Purified Water and Water for Injection)
- Power generation (high-pressure boiler feedwater)
- Laboratory and research applications
EDI requires high-quality feed water—typically RO permeate with conductivity below 40 μS/cm. Compared to conventional mixed-bed ion exchange, EDI eliminates the need for hazardous acid and caustic chemicals, reduces operating costs, and allows continuous 24/7 operation.
4. Containerized Water Treatment Systems
Containerized systems house complete water treatment trains within standard shipping containers, offering plug-and-play deployment with minimal on-site preparation. These mobile units can integrate multiple technologies—including RO, UF, EDI, and ion exchange—depending on application requirements.
Best suited for:
- Emergency water supply following natural disasters or infrastructure failures
- Temporary capacity augmentation during planned maintenance or peak demand
- Remote construction sites, mining operations, and disaster relief zones
- Rapid deployment for short-term industrial needs
The following is a 15tph containerized RO unit, suitable for campsites.

Containerized systems can be easily transported, deployed within days, and relocated as needs change. They are particularly valuable in scenarios where permanent infrastructure is impractical or where water demand is seasonal.
